Dat ze op hun levensweg vaak van overtuiging tot overtuiging zwierven, bewijst misschien de stelling van Krishnamurti — in Ommen in de jaren twintig even de spil van een internationale beweging — dat de waarheid uiteindelijk een land is zonder paden.

Jan J.B. Kuipers publiceerde circa 8o boeken over veelal historische onderwerpen. Hij won verschillende prijzen en was stadsdichter van Middelburg. Bij Walburg Pers verschenen onder meer boeken over de Beeldenstorm, de VOC, de Franse tijd, de Hanze en de Vikingen.

‘How Millions have been healed through the Mind alone’.

The aim of this book is to demonstrate the power of thought to heal the mind and body. Amao examines the rationale behind so-called mind, spiritual, and faith healing and explain why this kind of treatment works where conventional medicine fails. Amao also examines the most prominent leaders of the New Thought movement, who used mental and spiritual means to recover their health from supposedly ‘incurable’ diseases, and he describes the mechanism that triggered their healing. Finally, he explains why some people do not respond to any kind of treatment, with medicine or without it.

Mainstream academia should be made aware that mental and spiritual healing is an authentic, American-made phenomenon, that originated in and has flourished since the nineteenth century, particularly in New England. This phenomenon continues to develop today through the emerging field of energy psychology, which includes Thought Field Therapy and its derivatives, such as the Emotional Freedom Technique and similar practices.

Amao’s main hypothesis is this: All methods of mind and spiritual healing are self-healing. Human beings have an inner capacity to heal themselves. Indeed, conventional medicine can be said to heal, because it removes obstacles so that the body can regain its recuperative capacity.

In the last few decades, medicine has made vast strides, although there is still much to be learned about the basic problems of disease. At the same time, public interest in spiritual healing and unorthodox methods has greatly increased, often without critical or intelligent study of their results. Yet the most careful scientific scrutiny shows that in a small number of case quasi-miraculous cures do indeed occur.

In this book, the writers attempt to discuss the conditions, which allow exceptional cures to take place or which seem to prevent them. The fundamental question is: ‘What heals’? This raises further questions: Why does healing not always take place when all the apparently obvious conditions are there for it to do so? Moreover, why is it that sometimes a quite fantastic method will succeed when proved and tried medical treatment has failed?

The group, which produced this small book consists of qualified medical practitioners and psychotherapists, together with others who have had long experience with unorthodox methods of diagnosis and treatment. While acknowledging all that can be and has been done by medical science and psychotherapy to alleviate suffering, the conclusions arrived and emphasise the interior sources of healing that exist deep within each individual.

One of the most important areas in looking at a horoscope is interpreting from the aspects indications of possible accidents; and the subject is made all the more difficult by defining what constitutes an accident. The author defines it as ‘a bodily mishap occasioned without intent either on the part of the sufferer or the agent (if any) inflicting it’. There are various gradations of accidents, and in the research for this book, one of the primary considerations was to discover if possible any factors that are common to all serious accidents. Here with the evidence of statistics are 168 cases from Britain and the United States, which will assist astrologers in examining charts.

” Our first investigations must be directed to discover, it possible, any factors that are common to all serious accidents, or at least occur more frequently than mere probability would explain. My total collection, at the time of ‘closing the lists’ for tables, comprised 168 cases. These may be roughly divided as follows: asphyxiation (5), drowning (14), burns (19), scalds (9), gunshots (4), blows (21), crushings (9), wounds and cuts (7), vehicular (22), falls (32), machinery (5), railway (3), poisons (1), explosions (4), miscellaneous (10) and animals (3). Some of this book was written before all of these had come to hand, hence the above figures may not exactly agree with others given in Part Two, which also contains cases that came in after the tables had been finished. “
